A friend of mine once burst onto social media with the appalling news that his NIV Bible had left an entire line out of Romans 8:1.
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
His KJV Bible included the rest, and he suggested we add it to our NIVs:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”
I can sympathize with my friend’s concern. It matters what the Bible says–and doesn’t say. But I also know there’s more to the story than “the NIV left it out.”
The history of how the Bible has come down to us is amazing and complex. If you’re curious (or concerned!), I invite you to check out my digital course “How Did We Get the Bible?”
From now until the end of April, if you purchase “How Did We Get the Bible?”, you can also get a second course free (“What Is the Bible?”). This means for $20, you get two courses (three hours of instruction).
